Nickel, Nickel Alloys and Nickel-based Superalloys are used in a broad range of engineering applications, both as an additive alloying element, and also in the vast array of alloys which derive directly from it. The Nickel alloys termed "Superalloys" came into their own at advent of the jet age. Their high mechanical strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures along with resistance to corrosion and oxidation make them ideal for use in jet engines, where their high density can account for 50% of the engine's overall weight. Nickel and Stainless Steels have a very close relationship, in that 63% of all Nickel produced is used to form these alloys. When we extol the virtues of Stainless Steel, it is more often than not the Nickel element which is doing the hard work.
