Composition

0.19-0.65 Carbon, 0.35-1.90 Manganese, 0.15-0.30 Silicon, 0.35-1.15 Chromium, 0.40-2.00 Nickel, 0.08-0.30 Molybdenum.

Common Shapes

HSLA/HSSC Steels are commonly available in:

  • Sheets and Plates

  • Welded & Seamless Tubes and Pipes 

  • Rods

  • Bars

  • Structural shapes

(Not all alloys or tempers available in all shapes)

Characteristics

  • 20-30% lighter than Carbon Steel with the same, or enhanced, strength.

  • Yield Strength greater than 275MPa.

  • Depending on alloy, possess good corrosion resistance.

Weldability

Welding of HSLA/HSSC Steels is easily achieved via most standard welding processes.

Machinability

HSLA/HSSC Steels are easily machined.

Commonly Used Alloys (SAE)

942| 945 | 950 | 955 | 960 | 965 | 970 | 980 (in any one of A, B, C, D, S, W, X designations.

An Introduction

HSLA/HSSC Steels differ from other grades in that they are not designated by their microstructure or composition, but by their required mechanical properties. As the name suggests, they are used primarily in building structures where their high strength and enhanced corrosion resistance are suited.
